Collections Care Training Workshops

The Heritage League of Greater Kansas City offers workshops designed to serve directors and site managers for smaller historic sites, historical societies and museums, curators, registrars, collections managers, board members and volunteers. Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, the Heritage League workshops provide museum professionals with information, hands-on training, and skills to improve the care of collections in museums and historic sites. The Heritage League offers this workshop series, one each Fall and Spring, focusing on a different topic or collcetion material (e.g. wood, textiles, glass, ceramics, paper, photographs, historic structures, etc.) in each workshop.

Although the need for such training is great throughout the country, the Heritage League's program objectives are to: serve the needs of its members, strengthen the network of professionals working to preserve the region's heritage, enhance the sense of community and cooperation among area agencies and bring a new level of professionalism to a broad range of museums. The success and long-term effect of the workshops is the extended life of our cultural heritage, visible at participating institutions in the care and use of their collections.

A sampling of comments from past workshop participants:

"...(speaker) made a complicated subject easy to understand.!"

"Since I have returned (to my institution) I have looked at our situation through different eyes...I've looked at our weaknesses and strengths and how we can make improvements. I am also approaching my job differently with a lot more concern for the objects on exhibit. The information gathered during the winter session is invaluable."

The information I am taking back will raise our operation to a new level."

"I can better identify problems and formulate solutions for our collection."

"This was an excellent overview of the subject."

"I learned things to look for and treatment to be aware of."

"I think the handouts will be a good future reference."

The content of this course has provided products and updates and marvelous hands-on techniques that can be used in small and large parks/historic sites."

"The workshop instructor was top notch and would be a good candidate for a 2-day hands-on course."

"Really appreciate having this offered, especially at this reasonable cost."
