ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
By popular demand, this year's Heritage League Collections Care Workshop will focus on improving storage of the museum and archival collections and include more hands-on activities than ever before. The emphasis will be on making improvements with available resources, providing practical advice on establishing priorities to improve collections storage, and identifying where to get professional help when it is needed. Demonstrations and hands-on activities will provide participants with practical skills to prepare, house, and store collections including photographs, books, textiles, and more.
YOU WILL LEARN TO:
- Identify the most critical concerns for collection storage including physical space, environment, equipment, and housing materials.
- Establish priorities to improve collection storage.
- Evaluate storage options and create storage solutions.
- Vacuum and roll flat textiles for storage.
- Pack china, glass, wood, and metal objects in boxed storage.
- Create phase boxes for books and appropriate housings for photographs.
THE PRESENTERS:
Carol Dage has twenty-four years of experience in collections management. Carol earned her B.S. in History and M.A. in History Education from Northeast Missouri State University. Carol served as Archivist at the Wyandotte County Museum (1984-1985) and as Registrar/Archivist at Liberty Memorial (1986-1989). She joined the Harry S Truman National Historic Site in 1989 as Supervisory Museum Curator and, in 2002, added the role of Assistant Regional Curator for the Midwest Region of the National Park Service. Carol provides technical assistance and guidance on collection management issues to numerous Park Service sites.
Jean Svadlenak has thirty years of experience in the museum field. She earned a B.S. in Textiles and Clothing from the University of Delaware and a M.A. in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program, State University of New York. Jean's museum career began at the Hagley Museum, and she later served as Guest Curator for the New York State Historical Association. She worked at the Kansas City Museum for eleven years managing the Museum's collections, exhibits, and programs (1978-1989), and taught graduate courses in museum studies at KU and UMKC (1991-2001). Since 1989, Jean has worked on a project basis assisting museums and other groups to organize, inventory, catalog, and exhibit their collections.
Sarah Wood-Clark has twenty-five years of experience in the museum field. Sarah earned her B.A. in History from University of Northern Iowa and M.A. in Museum Science from Texas Tech University. Sarah served as Collections Manager for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Registrar for the Kansas Museum of History from 1985-2001. She later served as Collections Manager for the American Jazz Museum and Registrar for the Fine Arts Program at Hallmark Cards, Inc. Sarah currently works on a contract basis with museums on collections-related projects including organizing and improving collection storage.
